Napier woman finds mysterious 17-year-old note in her home's ceiling addressed to her

“I’ve always wanted to find something like this."

One Napier woman was shocked to discover a 17-year-old note left in the strangest of places by a young boy who used to live in her house.

After experiencing a leak in her ceiling, Rebecca Opie noticed a perfectly folded piece of paper stashed away between the two stories of her home.

“I’ve always wanted to find something like this,” Rebecca said.

Retrieving the mysterious note by fishing it out with a pair of tongs, Rebecca realised the note was actually written for her… kinda!

While not addressed to her specifically, it was addressed to the next person to live in the house.

“To the person who finds this. My name is Fergus and the date I wrote this was Tuesday, the 6th of February 2007. The first owners of this house were me, my mum Rosemary, and my nana Pauline,” the note began.

It goes on to describe the paint in the home back in 2007 was green, cream, and pink.

“If you could put this note back under the floor and write a note of your own, it would be awesome. Thanks, Fergus. PS I was ten when I wrote this,” the note finished.

Turns out the penman behind the paper has been found! The now 28-year-old Fergus Haywood told 1News he does remember writing the note and putting it under the floor.

"When that part of the house was getting sealed up and finished, I must’ve run off and written something," he said.

He reckons there may even be more where that note came from, telling Rebecca to keep an eye out if any other parts of the house need some work done.

"It’s a pretty cool way to connect with someone," he said.

Rebecca described the find as "really cute".

As for whether She'll be adding her own words alongside Fergus, she said: "I suppose I’ll have to.”

"I'm happy that she's leaving a note, I hope someone finds it in the future," said Fergus.
