Ever work at McDonald's back in the day? They're paying out big cash to ex-employees right now

That's one large payroll issue!

A whole 10 years worth of staff who have worked at McDonald’s across the country could be in for some extra money.

Back in 2016, MBIE audited a bunch of Kiwi companies and found that many - including McDonald's - needed to sort out how they handled leave and holiday pay to align with the Holidays Act 2003.

In 2019, Unite Union estimated McDonald’s NZ owed upwards of a jaw-dropping $45 million to roughly 60,000 staff.

If you’ve worked at McDonald's restaurant anytime between November 1, 2009 and December 6, 2020, it’s worth checking if you’re owed even just a few extra dollars.

One of our girls in the office actually scored herself back a whopping $1,600!

She worked at her local Macca’s between 2015-2018 and was "so stoked" to see she received quite a large payout.

"I feel like I've won the lotto!"

She added that it was a lot better than her $60 tax return earlier this year and has already planned to put the money to good use - a trip away to Bali.

The McDonald’s NZ website now confirms: “The fast food chain has got approval from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to begin remediation relating to annual leave and holiday annual leave pay for employees who worked at McDonald’s between November 1 2009 and December 6, 2020.”

You just need to have your IRD number on hand for the ‘Check My Remediation Payment’ on the McDonald’s payroll website.

However, McDonald’s NZ spokesperson Simon Kenney told Stuff that not everyone who worked there over the last decade will get a payout - But it doesn’t hurt to check, right?!
